More Top Picks Torque Wrenches
player ready...She was in a world of hurt last week, but we won’t have to shed too many tears for Tennessee hoops star Chamique Holdsclaw – the Lady Vols’ top player will get the last laugh. Sure, her team lost its bid for a fourth straight national title in a 69-63 upset loss to the Duke Blue Devils, and Holdsclaw had a lousy shooting game (she was 2 for 18 from the floor and 4 for 8 from the line) before fouling out. But Holdsclaw, perhaps the greatest woman to play college basketball, probably will be picked No. 1 by the Washington Mystics in the WNBA draft. (The Mystics were an awful 3-27 last season.) Or the WNBA might think it’s in the league’s best interest to move her to a major market, and in that case her logical destination would be the New York Liberty, her hometown team. Plus, she can expect to land some major product endorsements (like from athletic-shoe companies) and rake in some big bucks.
Losing a national championship in her senior year had to be painful – but she’ll always have the memories of the three other national championships she helped the Lady Vols win. And she’ll be busy creating new memories in the WNBA.
