There are some pretty fine point guards at the 1999 Final Four.

But think about the ones who didn’t make it: Wayne Turner of Kentucky and Andre Miller of Utah, who dueled in last year’s title game. Arthur Lee of Stanford and Jason Terry of Arizona.

Not a bad group. But they’re not here.

It’s obvious that success in college basketball begins at the point, the position through which offense is supposed to flow. But this year the point — pardon the pun — seems more relevant than ever. For after 60 games across four regionals, the four survivors each has a star at the point.

“Given the rules that we have, the floor is open for all of us,” Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun said. “Very simply, the people who have the ball in their hands the most times end up turning the game. And that’s kind of a simple explanation of why we all are here, and why the teams that excel in the game have great point-guard play.”

Added Mike Krzyzewski: “The guard play in Florida should be at the highest level.”
