The National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament is taking place Friday and Saturday at the Physical Education Building on the Illinois-Chicago campus, 901 W. Roosevelt Rd.

Illinois, Wisconsin-Whitewater, the Dallas Wheelchair Mavericks and Arkansas Rollin’ Razorbacks are the four Division I teams that will compete for the championship.

Dallas has won the last two titles, defeating Golden State each year. Whitewater, which offers scholarships to its wheelchair athletes, upset Golden State to advance to the semifinals.

The Fighting Illini team was one of the first wheelchair squads organized in the United States, playing its first game in 1948. Between 1948 and 1970, they reached the final four 13 times and won three national titles.

The semifinals for Division II begin at 1 p.m. and Division I play starts at 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.
