A 31-year-old Mundelein man was being held in the Lake County Jail Monday in lieu of a $500,000 bond after being charged with trying to kill his girlfriend, authorities said.

Miguel A. Gomez-Sagu, of the 1400 block of Churchill Court, was arrested Sunday and charged with attempted first-degree murder after trying to shoot the 28-year-old woman in the head, according to Steve Scheller, chief of felony review in the Lake County state’s attorney’s office.

Only the bullet jamming in the chamber of the .380-caliber semi-automatic pistol prevented the woman from being shot, said Scheller.

The incident occurred late Saturday when the victim reported hearing what sounded like a gunshot outside the apartment she shares with Gomez, said Scheller. Shortly after, Gomez entered the apartment, ordered the couple’s two daughters, ages 6 and 8, out of the room and pointed the gun at the victim, forcing her to sit in a chair in the kitchen, said Scheller.

As the victim screamed to her children to dial 911, Gomez put the gun to her head and pulled the trigger, Mundelein Police Sgt. Paul Werfelmann said.

The gun allegedly misfired and the bullet lodged in the chamber, Werfelmann said. The victim told police that after the gun misfired, Gomez made no further attempt to harm her, said Werfelmann.

The next morning, the victim went to the police, taking Gomez’s gun with her, said Scheller. Scheller said police found that the gun had recently been fired and that there was a bullet lodged in the chamber.

Werfelmann said that further charges are pending against Gomez.
