Chris Rodriguez

Beggar’s Paradise (Word)

It’s baffling why guitarist-vocalist Chris Rodriguez isn’t better known to pop audiences: His resume includes stints with Michael W. Smith, Wynnona and Kenny Loggins, and as co-frontman with Tommy Sims of the Nashville supergroup One World. With “Beggar’s Paradise,” Rodriguez has crafted a tight pop gospel album worthy of the spotlight. His accomplished guitar playing runs the gamut from classical (“Magdelene”) to strident rock (“Turn Around”) to Hendrix-influenced blues (“Your Love”). There’s also a noted Beatles influence running throughout “Beggar’s Paradise,” though as a vocalist Rodriguez is no John or Paul clone; his throaty falsetto often sounds more reminiscent of Michael McDonald or Loggins. If Rodriguez is clearly a multifaceted talent, then credit co-producer Brent Bourgeois with applying just the right amount of polish to “Beggars Paradise,” without dulling the edges or enthusiasm.
