Plan Commission members on Thursday night approved site plans for the village’s convention center and a 6-story hotel that will be connected to it via walkway.

Both projects are to expected to open in summer 2000 near the Harlem Avenue interchange at Interstate Highway 80.

The hotel will be the third such Holiday Inn in the country to include suites and an emphasis on high-tech electronics, with amenities such as sensors that will turn lights on and off automatically when guests enter and leave their rooms

There also will be an indoor lap pool with a sauna and whirlpool. The hotel will have 192 regular rooms, five whirlpool rooms and five suites.

The convention center, which will be 60,000 square feet expandable to 100,000, will be complemented by a lake and feature movable walls in its 35,000 feet of open space, allowing groups to determine the size of their meeting room.
