In a move that may help Hanover Park’s effort to form a village fire department, officials Wednesday tapped a new finance director who has overseen a similar process in Carpentersville.

Hanover Park village trustees on Thursday night are scheduled to welcome Donald Mazza, a seven-year finance director for Carpentersville. Mazza, 50, also worked as finance director for Roselle, where he lives with his family. Mazza will start his new job Monday. He succeeds Robert Whyte, who is to retire April 30.

Village Manager Marc Hummel cited Mazza’s “expertise in the pertinent financial arenas”–notably pensions, investments and experience in communities with two-county community tax levies–as reasons for his selection from about 70 applicants.

Hanover Park plans to disconnect from the Hanover Park Fire Protection District and create its own department. “Carpentersville went through the disconnection process, and Mr. Mazza was directly involved in all financial aspects of that project,” Hummel said.
