A legal opinion from the village attorney indicates that New Lenox can regulate tattoo parlors for health and safety reasons.
The village has no tattoo parlors, but there have been inquiries, according to Carrie Hansen, planning and development administrator for the village.
The opinion states there is no clear authority for the village to regulate tattoo parlors but indicates an implied authority regarding health issues, Hansen said.
An ordinance regulating tattoo parlors would be modeled on those in force in Winfield and Lockport, two suburbs that, like New Lenox, do not have home rule and rely on the county Health Department to inspect tattoo parlors and enforce health regulations.
