An 18-year-old Elgin man was shot in the leg Wednesday afternoon in what police described as a gang-related drive-by shooting.

The victim, who police said they believe is a gang member, was shot in the right thigh just before 3 p.m. as he walked with his teenage brother in the 200 block of East Franklin Street, said Police Sgt. Brad Entler.

Police were withholding information late Wednesday about which hospital the man was taken to, but Entler characterized the victim’s injury as “non-life-threatening . . . soft-tissue damage.”

“We’re working on a couple details (about the motive),” he added, “but we believe (the shooting) may have been retaliation from a past gang shooting.”

Police would neither release a description of the vehicle used by the gunman nor information about its occupants.
