In light of the recent fatal shooting at an Elgin alternative school and other school shootings around the country, District U-46’s Citizens Advisory Council is suggesting a number of measures to tighten security and protect students, teachers and staff.
At its general membership meeting last week, the council accepted a recommendation by its Safe Schools Committee that all employees of the Elgin-based district wear identification badges.
Most elementary school employees do not wear identification badges, while teachers and staff at district high schools and middle schools do, committee members said.
Another suggestion was for visitors to display passes and that each school enforce a sign-in and sign-out procedure, even for volunteers, consultants and contractors.
The school board is expected to discuss the proposals April 5.
