A traffic consultant told New Lenox officials Monday night that Cedar Road has some trouble spots that will create significant tie-ups.

“The performance of the whole corridor is really pinched by a couple of areas,” said Rob Duboe of Metro Transportation Group in updating officials on an ongoing study of the road.

The Village Board commissioned the study of Cedar, the village’s main north-south roadway, last year after a local traffic study failed to generate specific suggestions for eliminating traffic jams on the road.

The dilemma is finding a way to keep traffic moving without turning the road into a highway.

Duboe identified the trouble spots as intersections of Cedar and U.S. Highways 6 and 30. Duboe said the intersection at U.S. 30 is particularly troublesome because of its proximity to a Metra commuter station.

Some observers have suggested widening the road to four lanes, but the idea sparked a protest from several residents.
