Thanks to New Trier Blue’s 3-2 double-overtime victory over Naperville Central in Saturday night’s Red Varsity hockey quarterfinals, the Blackhawk Cup will be an all-Metro North affair.
And thanks to the Blue’s unanticipated success, New Trier’s less glamourous varsity squad is one win away from meeting its storied counterpart, New Trier Green, in an all-Trevian championship game due to Andy DuMont’s goal 1:20 into the second overtime.
Blue (30-15-4) will join conference foes Glenbrook North, New Trier Green and fellow underdog Glenbrook South in Monday night’s semifinal round. Blue has played against Green five times this year, losing all of them.
“We truly are the `other team,’ ” New Trier Blue coach Kurt Wittenberg, an assistant on Green’s 1993-94 championship team said. “It’s fun because we are the second team and we don’t get the kudos Green does. Blue just isn’t a resting place for kids who can’t make Green.”
Glenbrook South (25-15-3) continued its postseason run with a 2-1 overtime victory over Lake Forest (15-11-4). Fresh from its upset of second-seed Loyola Gold, 15th-seeded Glenbrook South won on Jack Lepens’ goal in OT.
