The City of Elgin has received one of the best scores in the northwest suburbs for the effectiveness of its building codes.

During Wednesday’s committee of the whole meeting, officials said the city scored a rating of 3, with 1 being the highest and 10 the lowest, from the Insurance Services Organization. The organization looks at building codes and a structure’s ability to withstand a natural disaster.

Building Department staff members suggested the rating could be bumped to a 2 without spending a lot of money by reassigning personnel and educating the public about building codes. In contrast to Elgin, the effectiveness of Schaumburg’s and Aurora’s building codes each were rated a 5, while Geneva’s codes rated an 8.

In other action, city officials said they may rename part of North Street in downtown Elgin to Symphony Way in recognition of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra’s 50th anniversary. The proposed name change would include North Street from North Grove to Dundee Avenues.

A public hearing held during the City Council meeting garnered support from local businesses.

“We support the change of the name . . . as our way of saying congratulations to the Elgin Symphony Orchestra,” said David Kellenberger, president of Kellenberger Auto Service.
