Investigators were searching for the cause of a house fire that resulted in an estimated $100,000 worth of damage to a residence in the 400 block of Chatham Cove in Winthrop Harbor, authorities said Wednesday.

Firefighters called to the scene Tuesday afternoon found heavy smoke pouring from the residence, said Lt. Timothy Neargarder of the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department, adding that residents had safely evacuated the home before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters from other nearby departments assisted in fighting the blaze, which began in the basement, said Neargarder.

After battling the fire for nearly three hours, firefighters brought the blaze under control, said Neargarder.

The fire was confined to the basement, although smoke damage to the home was extensive, said Neargarder. No one was injured in the blaze, he said.
