After a nearly one-week delay because a quorum could not be mustered, Sharon Fonte, widow of Glendale Heights Trustee Charles Fonte, was unanimously endorsed to finish the remaining two years of her late husband’s term.
Until April 2001, Sharon Fonte, 49, will sit in the chair occupied for nearly 10 years by her husband. Charles Fonte, 54, who also served five years as deputy mayor, died in January of lung cancer.
All six trustees came out to approve Sharon Fonte’s appointment. It was a far cry from last week, when two trustees were present and Village President Ben Fajardo asked police officers to get Trustees Kevin Williams and Charles Wheeler to the meeting.
Williams was not at home, and Wheeler said he had been nursing an injured ankle. A third, Robert Tolentino, was excused. There was no indication of whether any further action would be taken against Williams and Wheeler.
Sharon Fonte served on the Plan Commission for nine years and continues to be involved in the Chamber of Commerce.
“I’m going to try to continue on with what Chuck would have wanted to do,”she said.
