Village commissioners continue to mull the possibility of appointing an ad hoc committee to study options for a 1-square-block area near the downtown business district.

The area, which is owned by the village and commonly known as the Landbank, contains 10 vintage rental houses that could be razed for future development. A number of Downers Grove residents who live near the area have urged the village to consider preserving the homes, including one built in 1917 by a Civil War veteran.

Commissioners discussed the issue informally before Monday’s council meeting but came to no conclusion.

“We’re going back to the drawing board on this,” acting Village Manager Jerry Sprecher said Tuesday. “We probably will discuss it again in about 4 weeks.”

Sprecher said several council members were concerned about the “broader context” of the issue. He said that council members wanted to make sure that the interests of everyone in the community were represented, not just those of historical preservationists.

About 30 neighborhood residents turned out for the council meeting, according to Sprecher.
