Mokena trustees on Monday night supported a call for a Will County gas tax to pay for road improvements.
Mayor Robert Chiszar said that, while $115 million worth of road needs have been identified, Will County only gets about $4 million from the state, so repairs proceed slowly.

“It’s no secret that the county’s road system is becoming inadequate,” he said.
The resolution passed by the Village Board affirms support for the Will County Governmental League’s contention that the tax is needed to upgrade roads for the county’s growing residential and business population.
The league wants the Will County Board to ask the state legislature for authority to impose a motor fuel tax of up to 4 cents a gallon. League members approved a legislative agenda in January that included a call for the county gas tax.
Being able to levy a gas tax would put Will County on an even footing with other collar counties, such as DuPage, Kane and McHenry Counties, which have that authority, according to Will County leaders.
