It’s a keeper.
The Batavia City Council voted recently to scratch the sunset clause in its year-old design-review ordinance and allow the regulation to continue as a permanent part of the city’s zoning and development code.
The clause was a one-year deadline for the ordinance in case it did not work out as officials had hoped.
“I’ve been pleased with it, and I’m sure there will be even a greater call for it in the future,” said Mayor Jeff Schielke before the vote.
The ordinance lays out which types of developments or redevelopments require the design review and approval; application procedures; and the city’s design standards.
In the past year, the ordinance was included in the approval of a number of development proposals, including the Ridge Wilson Business Campus on the eastern edge of Wilson Street and the new Batavia Public Library building planned for the former junior high school property at Wilson Street and Batavia Avenue.

It also was included in the approval of redevelopment proposals, including the outdoor seating addition to Cafe Bari on Island Avenue.
