A 45-acre piece of land that has what is believed to be the second-largest Ohio buckeye tree in Illinois and an oak savanna dating to presettlement days in Kendall County has been donated to the Conservation Foundation.

The parcel, just northwest of Plano, was a gift from Arlene and Dale Robb of Urbana, according to Brook McDonald, executive director of the not-for-profit land preservation organization.

“The Conservation Foundation is very happy to be the recipient of this extraordinary remnant of presettlement Kendall County,” McDonald said.

The land has been in Arlene Robb’s family since 1857, when the property was purchased by her great-grandparents. Nearly all of the 45 acres are wooded, except where Little Rock Creek passes through.

In addition to the big Ohio buckeye and giant oaks, the property is home to one of the largest cottonwood trees in Kendall County, according to McDonald.
