Aided by tax incentives over 12 years, the four firms have committed to putting nearly 24,000 square feet under roof within 12 months. Business owners and their proposed building sizes are: Gilbert A. Collinge, electric-motor distributor, 2,400 square feet; Roland Metzger, security products, 6,000 square feet; Wilfred Roberts, energy systems, 11,000 square feet; and Matthew and Jennifer Sherly, construction-related operation, 4,500 square feet.
The firms had to commit to build within a year for the tax incentive, according to Steger village attorney Franklin Burkey. Village President Lou Sherman said the latest round of land sales brings the 30-acre industrial park, at Steger Road and Love Rock Avenue, to nearly full occupancy. He credited the county’s tax-incentive program with softening the sting of Cook County’s property tax classification system, under which manufacturing and commercial properties subsidize residential property taxes.
