At first, Proviso East lost five games because of forfeits.

Then, it was down to four.

For those scoring at home, the 10th-ranked Pirates are 19-8, including the four forfeits, heading into Tuesday’s sectionals.

“It’s been a crazy week around here,” assistant coach David Holmes said.

On Feb. 26, Proviso East was notified by the Illinois High School Association that it had to forfeit its first five games because 7-foot center Steven Hunter had violated an IHSA transfer rule. Hunter became eligible on Jan. 29.

Then, last week, East Aurora was forced to forfeit seven games for using an ineligible player. One of those games was a victory over Proviso East.

Proviso East retains its West Suburban Gold title because its only conference forfeit–to Leyden–still gave the Pirates a league-leading 10-2 mark.
