International Anthems For The Human Race (Essential)
An American quintet with an overt fondness for Britpop, All Star United has built a reputation as one of Christian rock’s most entertaining and energetic live acts. And for the most part, “International Anthems” crackles with infectious pop energy — though it’s not quite as manic as the band’s live show, and the lyrics sometimes stumble into paint-by-numbers peachiness. The best material fuses sly jet-set imagery with perky instrumentation; the pseudo-operatic backup vocals on “Worldwide Socialites Unite” segue into a screamer that puckishly chronicles life at the top. “Theme From Summer” suggests a fusion of Beach Boys harmony and shuffling, Kinks-influenced rhythm.
