In a 4-2 vote Tuesday night, New Lenox trustees adopted a resolution opposing a proposed auto racetrack in neighboring Joliet.
“There is some benefit to the track,” acknowledged Village Engineer Ron Franciskovich during the board meeting. But then he added, “Whether there is enough to pay for our police, I don’t know.”
New Lenox officials said the village would not benefit from the racetrack and said the village faces the prospect of spending extra money to control the traffic the racetrack would generate.
Besides the time and money spent controlling extra traffic headed to the track near Laraway Road between U.S. Highway 52 and Illinois Highway 53, the village might have to invest money in road signs directing racetrack patrons to Interstate Highways 80 and 57, trustees said.
The Will County Board voted last week to approve expanding an enterprise zone to give the track developers, Motorsports Alliance, the tax breaks they requested.
