With the Class AA girls sectionals beginning Monday, York coach Paul Pokryfke couldn’t have asked for a better tuneup–and Lyons Township coach Dawn Schabacker couldn’t have asked for worse.
Ninth-ranked Lyons (25-4, 10-2) watched a 16-point, first-half lead evaporate in a 47-45 defeat in the regular-season finale for the two West Suburban Silver teams.
York’s Antoinette Fadera (five points) grabbed an offensive rebound and followed with a basket with 1 second left for the game-winner. Fadera’s steal set up the game-winning possession. The basket capped a York comeback in which the Dukes outscored Lyons 27-15.
“I just rebounded the ball like I usually do and just put it back in,” Fadera said. “This means a lot; this is an awesome win.”
It’s a victory that may have implications in the upcoming tournament. Both schools are in the Lyons sectional with Lyons the No. 1 seed and York (19-9, 9-3) the fourth seed. Lyons defeated York in the schools’ first meeting Jan. 15.
Laura Milkert led York with 19 points. Amanda Papuga had 13 for Lyons.
Fremd 60, Lincoln-Way 36: Maggie Fontana had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 2 Fremd (25-2). Nicci Piech led Lincoln-Way (15-10) with 10 points.
Sandburg 55, Oak Park 30: Sandburg (20-10) rolled with Tracy Hoffmann’s 18 points.
Schaumburg 66, Rockton Hononegah 62: Andrea Brooke’s 24 points paced Schaumburg (15-12) past Hononegah (21-8).
Boys basketball
St. Joseph 63, De La Salle 34: Brandon Watkins scored 12 points to lead No. 2 St. Joseph (22-1) in the rout. The Chargers led 32-15 after the first half.

Schaumburg 69, Deerfield 41: The third-ranked Saxons (20-2) opened with a 20-7 lead and notched their first 20-win season since 1995. Dwayne James and Brandon Barber each scored 13 for Schaumburg.
East Aurora 86, Neuqua Valley 47: Darius Lathen and Justin Sherman scored 14 points apiece as the No. 4 Tomcats (20-1, 11-0) rolled in the Upstate Eight.
Peoria Central 59, New Trier 52 (OT): Brandon McKissic scored 20 points and Peoria Central outscored No. 5 New Trier 11-4 in overtime for the victory. Matt Lottich scored 27 points as New Trier (20-3) rallied from an 11-point deficit to force overtime.
Proviso East 61, Morton 39: No. 6 Proviso East (18-3, 9-1) led 18-5 after the first quarter and cruised behind Steven Hunter’s 24 points.
Providence-St. Mel 78, Curie 69: Corey Minniefield scored 22 points and Rebert Harris added 18 as No. 10 St. Mel (18-6) held off Curie.
Thornton 63, Champaign Centennial 51: Nate Williams scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead No. 13 Thornton (17-5).
Gordon Tech 60, St. Patrick 50: Jitim Young scored 23 points and Hodges Smith added 13 to lead No. 20 Gordon Tech (18-5).
Downers Grove South 56, Proviso West 55: Downers South (16-7) trailed 29-26 at the half but prevailed behind 12 points by Orlando Wilson and Will Harris in the West Suburban Gold.
Elgin 62, DeKalb 51: Sean Harrington scored 19 points and dished off 11 assists to lead Elgin (15-9, 8-5) in the Upstate Eight.
