Barrington’s Tim Meyer made a handful of clutch plays against third-ranked Schaumburg Saturday night, but the one he didn’t make will be tough to forget.

Meyer went for a dunk rather than an easy layup in overtime, and the decision proved to be disastrous. Meyer missed the dunk and was called for a technical for hanging on the rim. Instead of leading by three, the Broncos found themselves tied 66-66.

The Saxons rode the shift in momentum to a 74-72 overtime victory on the road to all but wrap up the Mid-Suburban League West title.

“There were a lot of missed plays, but that one sticks out,” Schaumburg coach Bob Williams said. “Any time you miss a play in a game like this, it sticks out. But that kid did a ton of great things too.”

For sure, the Broncos (17-6, 5-3) probably wouldn’t have been in position to win without Meyer, who finished with 11 points and three key blocks. But a converted layup, instead of a missed dunk, could have given the Broncos the lead for good.

“It was a possession we wish we had back,” Barrington coach Mike Obsuszi said. “But there were plays in regulation that we wish we had back.”

Barrington had the ball with 8 seconds left in regulation, but Todd Moser turned it over. Mark Pancratz missed a three-pointer at the buzzer for Schaumburg, sending the game into overtime.

The lead changed four times in overtime. Schaumburg (18-2, 8-0) made 5 of 6 free throws in overtime to escape with the win.

John Thorsen and Antoine McDaniel led Schaumburg with 13 points.

Ryan Indovina had a game-high 18 points for Barrington.
