FLIGHT DREAMS
By Lisa Knopp
University of Iowa Press, 286 pages, $22.95
A book with the subtitle “A Life in the Midwestern Landscape” may sound impossibly placid, but Lisa Knopp writes dramatically about the seemingly staid terrains of Nebraska and southern Illinois–and her place in them as a writer and professor, an astute observer of nature and a single mother of two children, one of whom is biracial. Throughout, Knopp rarely strikes a confessional note but offers a textured, sometimes heart-rending contemplation.
