Elgin police late Thursday were questioning potential witnesses about a fatal shooting of a local man earlier in the day.
A man believed to be about 18 years old was shot in the head near the driveway of a single-family home in the 100 block of South Porter Street, said Elgin Police Sgt. Robert Beeter.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Beeter said.
Police had only a tentative identity of the victim late Thursday and declined to release his name.
“It doesn’t appear to have been a drive-by,” Beeter said.
Beeter said police officers responded at about 5:30 p.m. to a call of shots being fired in the neighborhood.
“Officers got there and saw the subject laying face down in the driveway,” Beeter said. Officers said the man appeared to have a bullet wound in the forehead, according to Beeter
Beeter said the department’s major investigations division had no suspects but was following leads in the case.
