Efforts to win a special-use and zoning variation so Park Plaines Chevrolet can move to a 3.5-acre site in the 2100 block of Miner Street stumbled as the Des Plaines Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Commission in a joint meeting Monday urged that the city deny the relocation.
The measures will go before the full City Council at an undetermined date for a final vote, said Des Plaines Community Development Director Michael D’Onofrio.
Christine Ottoy, a real estate specialist for General Motors Corp., said the automaker wants to move Park Plaines from the 1700 block of Busse Highway “for increased visibility, access and also to provide a modern facility.”
Ottoy said the move could increase the dealer’s sales by 25 percent.
Residents near the proposed site–formerly occupied by single-family homes–said they feared its proximity to Farmers Creek would add to flooding woes.
“There are no bright lights near my home,” said Irene Serwa, a 10-year resident of the 1000 block of Crabtree Lane.
