Most residents will be relieved to learn that on Feb. 8 the U.S. Postal Service will begin recognizing the Miller Woods section as part of Steger.
Village President Lou Sherman credited the involvement of U.S. Rep. Jerry Weller (R.-Ill.) for the change-of-address for residents at Steger’s northeast end.
“We’ve been trying different routes to get the postal service to recognize Miller Woods as part of Steger since we completely annexed it in 1990. We finally were successful when we contacted Jerry Weller.”
At Weller’s suggestion, Steger’s village government and the USPS polled the residents of Miller Woods. They obtained a 70 percent response rate from residents who preferred a Steger address over a Chicago Heights address.
During the last eight years, addresses were assigned by the post office in Chicago Heights.
The change is a personal, as well as professional victory for Sherman, who stresses he began the fight long before moving to Miller Woods.
“It’s good for the mayor to live in Steger and not Chicago Heights,” he said.
