On a night when many people are out roistering, the reverends and temple masters at Chicago’s Zen Buddhist Temple plan something entirely different. During a year-end service titled “Kindling Light of Mind,” Zen Buddhists will participate in a defilement-removal rite – along with a candle-lighting ceremony, a Dharma talk and general life reflection and stock-taking. Zen Buddhism, which began in India around 500 B.C. and has filtered through Chinese Taoism to many parts of the world, involves ridding yourself from worldly attachments, such as the concept of “I.” In other words, there’s more to it than the principles of shot selection “zenmaster” Phil Jackson taught to Michael Jordan. The service begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at the temple, 1710 W. Cornelia Ave. 773-528-8685.
