The Community Crisis Center in Elgin will receive extra money from the federal Community Development Block Grant program.

Elgin City Council members Wednesday night unanimously voted to divide $124,500 left over from last year’s block grant allocation between the Crisis Center, 37 S. Geneva St., which will receive an additional $58,280, and the Residential Rehabilitation Grant Program, to get an extra $66,220.

“We just reallocated the money,” City Council member Ed Schock said.

The council also awarded a $147,780 bid to The Dubs Co. of Elgin to build a health clinic in the Crisis Center’s basement. Plans call for disabled-accessible rest rooms and examination rooms and improvements to the floors, walls and ceilings.

The Crisis Center had already been approved for $100,000 in funding through the block grant program.

The extra $124,500 in funding resulted from the Geneva Street Public Improvement project coming in under budget. In that project, new sidewalks and a retaining wall were built.
