Neil Finn at Double Door: When you strip any song to its essence, what remains is melody, and during his mostly solo, mostly acoustic sold-out performance Friday night at Double Door, Neil Finn demonstrated that few can match his songs for sheer stand-alone gorgeousness. Surveying his career from Split Enz through Crowded House to his recent solo debut, “Try Whistling This,” Finn sang with choirboy purity and sweetness, his voice floating, falling and finally leaping to glorious heights. Finn’s brother and on-and-off partner Tim joined him on a handful of songs, and the Finns wrapped the likes of “Only Talking Sense” and “It’s Only Natural” in their Lennon-McCartney harmonies. The songs’ swelling choruses had as much to do with ’60s folk anthems as the Beatles and added a spiritual aspect, particularly when the crowd sang along on “Four Seasons in One Day” like a church choir.
