A 24-year-old Texas man was jailed Monday on $50,000 bond after he allegedly mailed a package of chemicals used to make a so-called date-rape drug to himself at the Motorola campus in Schaumburg.

Police said Mark Stafford, an employee of Northern Telecom, arrived from New Jersey last week for a special project at Motorola. Before arriving, he had sent a package to himself that contained remnants of two chemicals used in the manufacture of gamma-hydroxybutyrate, or GHB, police said.

Since Stafford was not a Motorola employee, officials there had trouble locating him after the package arrived and they eventually opened it, discovering a number of sexual devices and bottles used to store the two chemicals.

Schaumburg police were called in to investigate and they said they found containers of the mixed substance in Stafford’s car and at the hotel in Schaumburg where he had been staying. He was charged with the manufacture of and intent to deliver a controlled substance.

Stafford, it turned out, had spent part of last week at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village after he apparently overdosed on the drug. Police said Stafford said he and his girlfriend used the drug recreationally, never giving it to others.
