Pam Tillis

Every Time (Arista)

A little bit of heartbreak goes a long way in Nashville, and Tillis’ recent divorce and split from her management firm both seem to have influenced this album’s message, which has a lot to do with people going their separate ways. Not that she sounds all that downbeat, really. The maturity displayed on “Every Time” is complemented by a mostly upbeat musical presentation that begins with “I Said a Prayer” and finds hope on the dating horizon. While the bright musicianship clearly lifts Tillis’ overall spirits, it’s on the harder edged material that she shines–especially the aching barroom ballad, “Whiskey on the Wound,” and “Hurt Myself,” which takes a sarcastic approach to dealing with pain. It helps, of course, that her always pleasant voice is in fine form and Billy Joe Walker Jr.’s production is impeccable.
