Officials of Wheaton-Warrenville Unit School District 200 said Thursday that approval of a $67 million bond issue on Nov. 3 is necessary to expand and upgrade facilities because of increasing enrollment and deteriorating buildings.

“This is a compromise package and not a wish list,” David Fleming, school board president, told an audience of more than 40 area residents at a League of Women Voters forum on the referendum issue. “This package was whittled down from almost $120 million.”

“We can’t continue to work to deliver world class programs in Third World facilities,” added acting Supt. Mary Curley.

If the bond issue is adopted, the property-tax increase next year would be $101.68 on a $100,000 house, $158.48 on a $150,000 house, $272.09 on a $250,000 house and $389.69 on a $350,000 house. The size of the increase would drop gradually through 2017.
