Big Backyard Beat Show (Arista)
Everyone’s favorite retro Nashville bar band has developed quite a loyal following since the release of its self-titled debut album two years ago. Almost constantly on tour since then, the highly versatile musicians in BR5-49 have opened for artists as disparate as George Jones and Bob Dylan, Faith Hill and the Black Crowes. “Big Backyard Beat Show” again puts on display the wide range of styles that have influenced the group, from rockabilly to Tex-Mex to mainstream country and rock ‘n’ roll. Sandwiched between covers of Buck Owens’ “There Goes My Love” and Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Wild One,” which open the set, and Billy Joe Shaver’s “Georgia on a Fast Train,” are nearly a dozen new tunes (especially fine are “18 Wheels and a Crowbar” and “Goodbye, Maria”) that can stand on their own with anyone’s output this year, and should forever remove the “novelty” label from the band’s routine.
