Michael Butler wanted to do something “unusual for the 30th anniversary of `Hair’ and the millennium.” A Beverly Hills firm, Tribe, helped him come up with a concept for a “traveling performing arts center.” On Wednesday, Butler and Tribe announced a 27-city tour starting next spring in San Francisco, with a stop in Chicago slated for 2000.

At the press conference, Hollywood’s Candlefish Theater troupe–which is currently performing “Hair”–performed several songs from the musical originally produced by Butler.

The traveling arts center will spend about a month in each city, setting up tents to house a main theater for “Hair” performances as well as two mini-theaters, village stages, clubs, shopping areas and a multimedia dome for a total ’60s experience. 7. A faux Haight-Ashbury and Greenwich Village are planned as well as re-enactments of speeches by Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy and Timothy Leary.
