In addition to chronicling life in the Depression-era South, photographer Walker Evans documented America’s billboards, shop fronts and street signs. In this evocative collection, Evans and Andrei Codrescu demonstrate the way America’s yearnings assert themselves through advertising. Subjects here range from stairs painted with ads for Royal Baking Powder to a roadside stand near Birmingham, Ala., with the slogan “Fish: Honest Weights, Square Dealings.”
