Voters in the Batavia Library District will be asked in November to approve an $8.8 million bond issue for a new library and agree to a tax-rate increase of 6 cents per $100 of equalized assessed valuation for operating expenses.

If both requests are approved, homeowners’ tax bills would increase by 20 cents per $100 equalized assessed valuation per year to 35 cents per $100 for 20 years.
It has been at least that many years that voters have been asked for additional money by the library, said Lorraine Ramus, president of the district’s board of trustees.
The bond sale proceeds would be used to tear down a junior high school building at Wilson Street and Batavia Avenue and replace it with a 45,000-square-foot library.
After a final consultation with its financial adviser, the Library Board gave unanimous approval to the measures Thursday night.
