Union members of the Chicago Building Trades Council have agreed to repair for free a dilapidated one-room schoolhouse in Hoffman Estates, Mayor Michael O’Malley said Tuesday evening.

The former Lindbergh School, built in 1929, along Shoe Factory Road, is on the site of a residential and commercial development being proposed south of the Northwest Tollway.

The developer, Shoe Factory L.L.C. in Hoffman Estates, has agreed not to bulldoze the building, which has been ravaged by vandals and nearly obscured by weeds, O’Malley said.

Work on the building will include replacing broken windows and tearing down interior walls. The building was rented as a house after the school closed in the 1940s. Some residents have suggested turning the building into a museum or community center.
