Lawyer Thomas F. Bennington Jr. was slated Monday night by the Downers Grove Township Republicans to run for a seat on the DuPage County Board from District 3.
Bennington, 36, a Downers Grove resident and a partner in a Chicago law firm, will fill the vacancy on the November ballot that resulted from the death this year of board member Robert J. Day. Before his death, Day had won the GOP nomination in the March primary for one of the two board seats up for election in District 3.
The County Board district, in southeastern DuPage, includes all except a sliver of Downers Grove Township.
Bennington defeated Daena Hinkelman, a Darien resident and member of the Downers Grove Township board, in a weighted vote of precinct committeemen.
Bennington has been involved in GOP activities for about seven years and has worked for a number of Republican candidates in DuPage.
He pitched himself to committeemen by saying he could “get along with all of the existing County Board members.”
He is expected to be picked by interim County Board Chairman John Case to fill the three months remaining in Day’s board term.
Bennington and incumbent board member Wallace Brown (R-Downers Grove) will face Democrats James Cavallo and Megan McCarthy Schroeder in the November election.
