Golden gloves: Baseball’s greatest legends couldn’t have scripted a more exciting win. Some kids from Chicago Heights got a 10th-inning victory at Wrigley Field late last month to become the Reviving Baseball in the Inner City Junior League South Division champions. The program is sponsored by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago and the Chicago Cubs.
The 13- to 15-year-olds who play on the Chicago Heights Trax Stars, a team named for their Cubs mentor Steve Trachsel, got off to a good start, but it took double plays in the last three innings to keep the team’s hopes alive. Victor Villarreal marked his 15th birthday with the winning hit in the 10th inning to defeat the Logan Square Packers.
“It was a real nail-biter,” says coach Diane Villarreal, Victor’s mom.
