Steger residents will vote in November on an advisory referendum measure proposing to shift some property tax burden from Will County residents to Cook County residents.
Steger trustees voted Monday to put the issue on the November ballot.
The Steger Wilco Action Tax Force is promoting a plan that it says would trim taxes paid by Steger’s Will homeowners in taxing districts that span Will and Cook. The Cook property owners in those districts collectively would make up for the lost revenue. Cook property owners are in the majority in those districts, so the difference would be spread over a larger number of people, making it less of a burden on them than on Will residents there, the group says.
