Des Plaines City Council members voted 5-2 this week to grant preliminary approval of plans for a downtown redevelopment.

Aldermen approved the project’s Planned Unit Development on Monday night. The action is necessary if multiple building types are constructed on a property with a single zoning classification, officials said.

The downtown development planned for a 6.2-acre parcel will include a new library, two retail buildings, a parking garage on the former site of the Des Plaines Mall and two residential buildings, each with 91 units.

Though several aldermen expressed concerns about parking for condominium owners and guests and about fire safety in the three-story garage, discussions on those issues were postponed to a future meeting.

The two issues prompted votes against the development plan by Alds. Tony Arredia and Patricia Beauvais.

“With the parking set up the way it is, I can’t vote in favor of this measure,” Beauvais said.
