Otis Rush
Any Place I’m Going (House of Blues)
Rush sounds revitalized on this set recorded in Memphis with producer Willie Mitchell, one that matches his passionate guitar and vocals with A-level material. Rush’s signature crying guitar, riverwide vibrato and pleading voice are the essence of the blues, whether he’s paying homage to Albert King on the sinuous “I Got the Blues,” reviving early tunes like “Keep On Loving Me Baby” or getting soulful on Marvin Gaye’s “Pride and Joy.” Rush even throws in a bit of reggae on the title track. But fear not: Rush never gets too far from the blues. In an era with few true blues legends left, it’s heartening to hear Rush sounding better than ever.
