Teachers union officials told the Glenbard High School District 87 school board Monday night that they had filed a notice of an intent to strike with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board earlier in the day.
The school district has been bargaining since March with officials of the Glenbard Education Association. Seven meetings were conducted by negotiators between then and May, when a federal mediator was called in to help break the impasse, which focuses largely on salary issues.
Officials said the discussions are at a standstill, and union officials say they will lead their membership out on a strike if a tentative agreement is not reached by Aug. 21.

William Wright, the head of the union, said the union will meet at 6 p.m. that day at the College of DuPage to take a strike authorization vote.
The teachers contend that the district’s salary scale is too low to attract and retain qualified educators.
About 550 school district employees are represented by the union.
“We are committed to doing all we can to bring contract negotiations to a conclusion,” board president Joy Talsma told the school board and the 35 teachers and parents at the meeting.
