A Waukegan man was killed in a traffic accident in Chicago Monday morning after driving his car underneath a tractor-trailer, police said.

The accident happened at 3:20 a.m. at 616 W. 51st St. in Chicago.

Police said Erick Singleton, 22, of 338 N. Butrick St. was driving out from under a railroad overpass on West 51st Street when he failed to slow down for a tractor-trailer that was pulling onto the street from a driveway.

Singleton’s 1996 Ford Contour went underneath the trailer, which tore the roof off the car, and kept going until crashing into a fence about 50 yards away, police said.

Singleton suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the major accident investigation unit for the Chicago Police Department.

Police said they did not know how fast Singleton was driving, but he was exceeding the 30 m.p.h. speed limit. Alcohol was not a factor, police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Leo Tate, 28, of Creve Coeur, Ill. , was not injured.
