After more than 1 1/2 years in a task reminiscent of “pushing a large rock up a hill,” James Volk, chairman of the city’s Telecommunications Committee, told the City Council this week that a cable franchise extension agreement with Multimedia is ready for council approval.

Especially important in the 15-year agreement, he noted, is the $400,000 from Multimedia to support both local programming and the city’s existing television studio, currently located in the cable company’s headquarters but which will eventually be relocated to Batavia High School. The first $150,000 will be given upfront, with another $150,000 to come in five years and the remainder in 10 years, he said.

Mayor Jeff Schielke praised the committee’s work. “It opens a new area for enhancing the local programming on television and will have benefits for years to come,” Schielke said.

The council also approved the formal transfer of its contract with Multimedia to Communications Services Inc.
