An open space plan that envisions linking up green areas throughout the village got the nod Monday from the Plan Commission.

Commissioners voted to recommend that the Village Board approve the plan submitted by consultant Chris Lannert and add it to the town’s comprehensive plan.

“It’s a very valuable planning tool. That’s how we have to look at it,” Cory Lund, chairman of the commission, said.

Lannert said his study mapped out varieties of open space, such as watersheds, trails, conservation easements and parklands. Utility easements and roadside lands make good links, he said.

The open space plan follows the guidelines of the village’s comprehensive plan, which calls for lower population densities as development moves out from the center of town.

The Old Plank Road Trail, a recreational trail for walkers, runners and bicyclists, which is slated for extension into New Lenox, is a key component of the plan.

Acquiring land along the banks of Hickory Creek to preserve as greenway space would provide another valuable recreational resource for the village, Lannert said.

The open space plan will be presented for Village Board approval later this month, Hansen said.
