Members of the Glendale Heights Plan Commission on Tuesday night expressed reservations about a proposed strip mall at Bloomingdale Road and North Avenue.
Commissioners said they are urging the developer, the Heritage Group, to come up with a more balanced mix of retail establishments to avoid the empty strip mall syndrome that sometimes afflicts such developments. The company is proposing to anchor the mall with a video store plus three smaller businesses.
“Give us something special to alleviate the fear,” said Chairman Robert Ristich.
The development would include a 16,000-square-foot retail building and a 4,000-square foot restaurant. A planned unit development is required because two buildings cannot otherwise be built on one lot.
A similar development proposal for the area was before the commission and included construction of a St. Louis Bread Co. store, but trustees sent that back to the commission late last month for further consideration.
